Used in the treatment of Calcium Gluconate deficiency states & as a dietary supplement when intake may be inadequate In. Calcium Gluconate is used in- Severe hypoglycemic tetany Hypoparathyroidism Vitamin D-deficiency Osteoporosis and Extreme hypercalcemia
Composition
Pharmacology
Calcium gluconate is used to prevent or treat negative calcium balance. It also helps facilitate nerve and muscle performance as well as normal cardiac function.
Dosage & Administration
1-2 ampoules Ca+ Gluconate IM. Daily or every alternate day. Children require 1/2 of adult dose lM injection should be given deep to gluteus medius muscle Using a long needle. This route is not recommended for children. Acute hypocalcemia : 10-20 ml (2.32-4.64 m.mol)/Kg. Body weight Fluoride or lead poisoning : 0.3 ml/Kg Body weights. Neonatal tetany : 0.3 (0.7 m.mo)/Kg body weight.
Contraindications
In Patients receiving cardiac glycosides In patients with renal failure. In patients with severe hypercalciuria and In patients with hypercalcemia
Side Effects
If Ca+ Gluconate Inj is administrated too rapidly, nausea, vomiting, hot flushes, sweating, hypotension & vasomotor collapse, possibly fatal may occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Either studies in animals have revealed adverse effects on the fetus (teratogenic or embryocidal or other) and there are no controlled studies in women or studies in women and animals are not available. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Precautions & Warnings
Impaired renal function; cardiac disease; hypercalcaemia-associated diseases, e.g. sarcoidosis; other malignancies. Pregnancy.
